Robex Lundgren Music Blog - Interview with SoulDÆmon

What´s the name of your band?

Hello I'm Mark SoulDaemon from SoulDÆmon band.

How was the band formed?

The band is 5 years old, the bass project is 10 years old.

You tell about your band?

The history of band is a quiet strange. It was born in 1999 as personal bass project, change into band in 2009. The first demos were only with growl vocal and bass that played both rhythm riff and solo, as guitar. Then in 2006 added a drum machine for Dead World EP. In 2009 Andychrist (Lowiper, Beyond red n' violet, ex Rusty Agel, Mr.Hankey ) and Lord Putridus (ex Algol, Rusty Angel, ex Chaos in art ) joined the band.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band?

Me and the drummer are from Padua, the guitarist is from Treviso, in north east of Italy. The current line up is: Mark SoulDaemon: lead bass and vocal Andychrist: lead guitar and backing vocals Lord Putridus: drums.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started?

To create original music using bass as main instrument

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you?

I'll try... imagine old school death metal, merged with doom. The tunes are very dark and row, sometimes oppressive. The bass is distorted and guitar exchange their roles, so bass plays solo as guitar and guitar harmonize as the bass.

Where was your first gig?

Our first gig where in a historical club of Padua, called Country Star but now it's closed.

Where was the latest gig?

It was last summer at selection for Gods of Mestre festival.

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics?

Mark SoulDaemon writes the music and lyrics. Then in room, the band works for rearrange and harmonize the song. Everyone in the band has space to contribute with new ideas.

Who has the best since of humor in the band?

I don't know.... we are friends since long time, ten years at least, so we have lots of fun to play togheter and joke... but Lord Putridus is the most crazy !!

What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are?

We play Heretic Metal!!! Hahaha I think we are not in a genre, we have a unique sound.

Why Heretic Metal?

Because it destroys every rule of composition, guitar and bass exchange role in the song. When we play live, fans perceive this music in different ways. Some people say that we play black metal, someone death, someone proto-death, someone death-doom, some heavy metal riffs, other noise.... I don't know but we are proud to crate unique sound! But for the metalhead that likes only classic metal style, it's not easy to accept our style... sometimes they also confuse my bass with guitar

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about?

Normally bass is second instrument, in front there are voice and guitar, then bass and drums; song are created around a guitar riff. But for me bass is inner instrument, that can talk about your feelings, not only a rhythm or groove instrument. So it was normal try to compose music. I play in different styles, I change lots in the song, shred style, fingered style, powerchords . The lyrics talk about the constraints, the role that we play in life, the countless masks that we carry, the void within ourselves when we try to relate with society that materialism more extreme wing tip. The incompleteness that can result in discomfort, despair, hatred, disease, social problems...

Do you write your own material or mainly covers?

Our own material, we don't like cover bands. Sometime we arrange some song as homage to their creator for example Twilight of Gods by Bathory. Ma just one in a live.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they?

As bass project I made three demos Race of Evil in 1999-2002 , DemonRis in2004, Fragment of Sanity in 2005, one EP, Dead World, in 2006. As band coming soon, in the next months, the new album called Heretic Metal

Do you have any clips on YouTube?

Yes I have two clips from the bass project: the first is a bass solo from Fragment of Sanity; the second is Dead World video for Ep; it talks about environmental disasters and human race extinction.

How old are you?/What got you started in music?

I'm 34, the next month..., i remember very well my first metal records. It was the best of Manowar, my friend passed me the tape in 1992.

At what age did you start playing?

I stared when I was 13 with classic guitar, then when I was 18 with bass

How old were you guys when you first stood on stage?

In a stage ... Mark SoulDaemon - I was 21. Lord Putridus was 20 when did his first show as singer; 13 years later as drummer

What year was the band started?

Band in 2009, bass project in 1999

Best/worst gig you've played?

Best gig in a club where people sing with us. The worst in a club, with few people. It's normal, it is hard time in Italy for live music. What places will you be playing in the imidate future? 29th of November at Common of Death Festival, in a small club Where have you played from then till now? In small clubs, pubs and festivals.

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? From Mark... Mordbid Angel but for Andychrist Slayer with Dave Lombardo. For Lord Putridus was Ozzy Osburne in 1991 in Milan.

Is it always the same songs live? The most yes, they are the songs of Heretic Metal; sometimes we introduce a new song or collaboration with other band, for example with a heavy metal band we prepared a jam session to perform Heart of Steele. Also, we are working on lots of material from old demos and new ones

Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? No we hadn't yet.

How big crowds do you usually play for? Depends live music is not popular in these years, normally form 50-100 people.

What are the plans for the rest of the year? This month will be released on new album Heretic Metal; then we'll play at two festivals in winter and... I don't now exactly I'm working to plan other date, maybe in foreign country hahah

Where do you usually play? Clubs, pub, festival.

How do you get psyched up for a gig? Depends, normally quiet, but a bit of anxius is normal

What are your goals with your music? Looking for a record label, play in foreign country and have fun.

When did you decide to go all in for the music? When I got my first metal record. Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? In absolute older bands.

What are your sources of inspiration?

I'm fan of Epic Metal like Manowar, Cirith ungol, Manilla road, also I like Obituary, Mordid Angel, Bolt thrower... Andychrist likes heavy metal in general and Psychedelic Rock, and Lord Putridus likes heady, death, black, classic music

What's the first step when making a new song?

I haven't fixed rules. Sometimes I write music first then lyrics. Other times I write lyrics and then I try to sing and create music. Normally I prefer to compose in the night.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums?

I'm glad if people download my music and share songs. It's a good thing, more easy to reach new fan but for bands that I like I buy album, also for underground bands. It's important to support them..

What would be your dreams for the band?

Became famous hahaha... I'm joking, I know it's difficult to be famous with death metal but as all musician to find a good record label, and play lots concerts

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to?

I listen heavy metal, but I like old pc tunes like Amiga, Commodore 64, old videogames songs.

What do you hold most dear?

We have to defend yourself from the conformity that society can impose us. The most dear things are myself my individuality, family and friends.

What would be your greatest fears for the future?

For future nothing at moment, but I know we all live in the edge of the knife. Our society could fall down in a few seconds. We all live over our possibility, in a not sustainable system, we have environmental diseases, social diseases, economic crisis that strikes very hard.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then?

In the stage, that my equipment works bad and broken

Have you been part of any other projects?

No, many people asked me, but I can't do a good work in many bands. Andychrist is the opposite, he plays in other two bands.

Have you been in any other bands?

Yes thrash grind band called Kautery, and other death metal bands all split up.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music

I'm freelance researcher at University about GIS science.

What would you do if there was no music?

Fortunately I have a Medieval reenactment group. I would focus in fighting and history research.

How important are your fans?

They are all for a band, without fans you are alone in your room.

How often do you rehearse?

One day at week, depends of job business.

Where do you rehearse?

At drummer's home.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment?

Survive in the abyss and Heretic Metal.

Passion to do what we love

Do you have any webpages?

Yes we have official page www.souldaemon.altervista.org but also you can find us on Facebook and Reverbnation. Looking for SoulDaemon Heretic Metal.

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there?

Don't make war with other bands, play together and have fun!

How do you view the music industry of today?

In crisis.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence

Heretic Metal

What is your favorite crappy instrument?

SID tunes!

What's your Pre-show ritual?

Andychrist drinks beer, I make exercise for finger and voice and Lord Putridus walks barefoot around the club. Nothing of special...

Do you have anything to add?
